An italian enclave in Manhattan. Look out New York: Caruso is bringing some of Italy and its flair to the city.

Instead of going through the hassle of a long-haul flight to Italy, just hop in a cab and ask for Caruso’s flagship store at 45 East 58th Street, between Madison and Park Avenues, right in front of the Four Seasons Hotel’s 58th Street entrance.

The entrance is a grand grey limestone, baroque style door of the very elegant Park Avenue Co-ops with three large windows that guarantee a splash of natural light.

Pass through the glass door and you’ll immediately be immersed in an Italian setting that invites you to stroll through the 4,500 square-foot Caruso flagship store: the first in the world and, of course, one-of-a-kind.

Over the past thirty years this was home to the glorious Spanierman Art Gallery: an exclusive address for antiques and old masterpieces in Manhattan.

So Caruso commissioned wood artist Giuseppe Amato to interpret the panoramic terrace of a traditional patrician Italian Palazzo overlooking a Renaissance garden all’italiana in the classical technique of intarsia.

This is both a homage to the artistic vibe that still permeates the space and a reflection of the Italian flair for the fine arts.

The terrace is strategically positioned at the end of a 60-foot hallway and is focused around 12 wooden columns that enhance its linear perspective. Visible from street level, the artwork is a very dramatic way to immerse yourself in “Italian Beauty”.

All the material used in the store comes from Italy, including the old oak flooring as well as a special kind of strikingly veined terracotta tiles that are made from two different color clays from the floodplains of the Po river, close to Soragna: the area where Caruso was founded in 1958.

The other cultural reference for the store’s concept is the Italian liberal arts, particularly opera. Its VIP room is a tribute to the Italian temple of opera, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, with its velvet curtain and a rare set of memorabilia from one of the old theatre’s boxes.

Enrico Caruso – a connoisseur of fine clothing and one of the brand’s “elective affinities” – would have loved to have his famous jackets made-to-measure in just this kind of setting.

Naturally, the store is ultimately the showcase for sophisticated Italian menswear, a manufacturing art of which Caruso is a master.
